HVAC Diagnostic Guide HIGH URGENCY

Furnace Smells Like Gas

Rotten egg or sulfur smell coming from or near your furnace.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. STRONG smell or persistent: leave the house immediately, call your gas company from outside
  2. Faint smell only at startup: may be normal brief ignition smell — should clear in 30 seconds
  3. Do NOT operate light switches, electronics, or use a flame near the furnace
  4. If everyone has headaches, dizziness, or nausea, that's not a gas smell issue — leave NOW (possible CO)

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

35%

Loose or Damaged Gas Line Connection

What's happening

A fitting at the gas valve, union, or supply line has developed a small leak. Even tiny leaks produce a noticeable smell because gas is intentionally odorized (mercaptan added) to be detectable at very low concentrations.

How to check

ONLY check with the gas SHUT OFF at the main valve. Spray soapy water on accessible gas connections — bubbling identifies leaks. Do not use any flame or spark to test.

How to fix

Licensed gas technician work only. Joints are tightened or repacked with appropriate thread sealant rated for gas (not Teflon tape unless specifically rated for gas). After repair, tech does a pressure test.

Failing Gas Valve

What's happening

The electronic gas valve at the furnace is leaking — either at its connections or internally, releasing gas when it shouldn't.

How to check

Smell is strongest at the gas valve itself. Smell present even when furnace is not actively running. Old furnaces (15+ years) more prone to this.

How to fix

Gas valve replacement. $80-200 part plus licensed installation. After replacement, full system pressure test.

Brief Smell at Ignition Only (Often Normal)

What's happening

A faint gas smell during the brief window between the gas valve opening and the burners igniting is normal on some furnaces — particularly older ones. Should clear within 30 seconds.

How to check

Smell only at startup, gone within a minute. No smell during operation or when furnace is off. Burners ignite normally with blue flame.

How to fix

If brief and clears completely — no action needed. If smell lingers longer than 30 seconds or you smell gas at other times, treat as a real leak.

Pilot Light Out (Standing Pilot Models)

What's happening

On older furnaces with standing pilots, if the pilot goes out and the safety doesn't fully shut off gas, a small amount can escape. The safety mechanism usually prevents this, but failed thermocouples sometimes allow leakage.

How to check

Look through the inspection window for the pilot flame. Smell present even with the main burners off.

How to fix

Shut off gas at the main valve. Ventilate the area. Replace the thermocouple before relighting. If leak persists with thermocouple replaced, gas valve safety has failed — needs replacement.

Damaged Gas Supply Line

What's happening

The supply line itself has a crack or hole. Common after construction work, rodent activity, or settling that stresses the pipe.

How to check

Larger leaks make the smell strongest along the supply line, not just at the furnace. Sometimes you can hear hissing in serious cases.

How to fix

Emergency — leave the house, call gas utility from outside. They will shut off service. Licensed plumber/gas fitter repairs the line. Don't attempt yourself.

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to smell gas when the furnace starts?
A very faint, brief smell at the moment of ignition can be normal on some furnaces — gas flows for a moment before the ignitor lights it. Smell should be barely noticeable and gone within 30 seconds. Anything stronger or longer is NOT normal.
What should I do if I smell gas in my house?
Don't operate switches, phones, or anything that could spark. Open windows on your way out. Leave the house. Call your gas utility's emergency line from outside or a neighbor's phone. Don't go back in until they say it's safe.
How can I tell the difference between a gas smell and other smells?
Natural gas is intentionally odorized to smell like rotten eggs or sulfur — distinct and unpleasant. A burnt smell, musty smell, or oil smell is something else (often dust burnoff, mold, or motor issues). When in doubt, treat as gas and leave.
Can I fix a gas leak myself?
No. Gas line work is illegal for unlicensed individuals in most jurisdictions, and the consequences of a mistake (explosion, fire, asphyxiation) are too severe. Even tightening a fitting that looks loose can cause more damage if done wrong. Always hire licensed.
