York Troubleshooting: Most Common Failures

AC Capacitor & Contactor — Standard Failures

York and Coleman condensers (YCG, YCE,?"?"CG, CHP series) use standard dual run capacitors and contactors that are cross-compatible with universal replacements. Match the MFD rating (typically 35/5 or 40/5 MFD 440V) and amperage (30A or 40A). These are the same simple DIY repairs as any other brand. Shop York capacitors →

Furnace Ignition — S1-02532625000 Igniter

York/Coleman furnaces use the S1-02532625000 hot surface igniter (and variants) across many models. This is a standard silicon nitride igniter that lasts 4-6 years. Symptoms of failure: inducer motor runs but no glow from igniter, or the igniter glows weakly and can't light the gas. A $25-$35 DIY replacement. Shop York igniters →

Control Board LED Codes

York/Coleman/Luxaire furnaces share control board diagnostic codes: 1 blink = system OK, 2 blinks = unit operating but calling for service, 3 blinks = pressure switch error, 4 blinks = high-limit open (dirty filter), 6 blinks = rollout switch open, 9 blinks = ignition failure. See the error code chart above.

York vs Coleman vs Luxaire — Same Parts?

Yes. York, Coleman, and Luxaire are all owned by Johnson Controls and share the same engineering platforms. Parts cross-reference directly across all three brands. A York control board fits the equivalent Coleman and Luxaire models.

York Parts FAQ

Are York, Coleman, and Luxaire parts the same?
Yes — all three are owned by Johnson Controls and share identical engineering platforms. Parts, control boards, and motors cross-reference directly across all three brands.
Where do I find my York model number?
On the data plate inside the access panel. York model numbers follow patterns like YCG36B21S (condenser) or TG9S080B12MP11A (furnace). Coleman uses patterns like CHP042A3E1A (heat pump). The model encodes the unit type, capacity, and configuration.
Is York a good HVAC brand?
York is America's oldest HVAC brand, founded in 1874. Now owned by Johnson Controls, York systems are known for durable heat exchangers and commercial-grade engineering in residential equipment. The Affinity and LX series are their premium residential lines. Parts are widely available and reasonably priced.
Why is my York furnace blinking 3 times?
3 blinks = pressure switch error. Check the condensate drain trap (clogged trap is the #1 cause), inspect the flue vent for blockage, verify the inducer motor is running. Replace the pressure switch only after clearing all airflow obstructions.
