Before replacing the gas valve ($150-$250), rule out cheaper causes. Check the flame sensor ($15) — a dirty sensor causes the valve to shut off after 3-7 seconds. Check the igniter ($25-$40) — if it doesn't glow, the control board won't open the gas valve. Test the valve's solenoid coils with a multimeter — you should read 24V AC when the board calls for heat. If you have 24V at the valve but no gas flow, the valve has failed internally.
Gas valves cannot be repaired — they're sealed assemblies with internal solenoids and regulators. When they fail, the entire valve must be replaced. Never attempt to disassemble or adjust the internal regulator — this voids the safety certification and creates a gas leak risk.
A single-stage valve has one setting — fully open or fully closed. A two-stage valve has a low-fire and high-fire setting, controlled by the furnace board. Two-stage valves provide quieter, more efficient operation at low-fire and full capacity at high-fire during extreme cold. You must replace with the same type — a single-stage valve won't work in a two-stage furnace.
