How to Choose the Right HVAC Transformer

Every furnace, air handler, and many condensing units contain a control transformer that steps down line voltage (120V, 208V, or 240V) to the 24V low-voltage signal used by the thermostat, contactor, gas valve, and other control components. When a transformer fails, the entire HVAC system loses its control signal and stops operating. Transformers are Class 2 rated for safety and are one of the most straightforward HVAC components to diagnose and replace.

Understanding VA Ratings

The VA (volt-ampere) rating indicates how much power the transformer can deliver to the control circuit. Common HVAC ratings are 40VA for standard residential furnaces and air handlers, 50VA for systems with additional accessories like humidifiers or zone dampers, and 75VA for larger commercial systems or units with multiple control devices.
