When a transformer fails, the entire HVAC system loses its control signal and stops operating. The VA (volt-ampere) rating indicates how much power the transformer can deliver to the control circuit. Common HVAC ratings are 40VA for standard residential furnaces and air handlers, 50VA for systems with additional accessories like humidifiers or zone dampers, and 75VA for larger commercial systems or units with multiple control devices. Always match or exceed the original VA rating. A higher VA transformer can safely replace a lower one, but never use a lower VA rating as it will overheat and fail prematurely.

A burned smell or visible discoloration on the transformer body also signals internal failure.
