Ruud Troubleshooting: Most Common Failures

Furnace Flame Sensor — #1 Rheem/Ruud Failure

Rheem and Ruud furnaces have the highest flame sensor replacement rate of any major brand in our data. The flame sensor on Rheem Classic, Classic Plus, and Prestige models accumulates carbon quickly due to sensor positioning. The symptom: furnace lights, runs 3-7 seconds, then shuts off. Clean with fine sandpaper or replace — it's a $15-$20 part. Rheem part 62-24164-01 is the most common. Shop Ruud flame sensors →

AC Capacitor Failure

Rheem/Ruud condensers (RA13, RA14AZ, RA16AZ series) use standard dual run capacitors — typically 40/5 or 45/5 MFD 440V. The outdoor unit hums but doesn't start when the capacitor fails. These are identical to capacitors used in other brands — match the MFD and voltage rating. Shop Ruud capacitors →

Control Board Issues

Rheem furnaces use the 62-104058-02 and similar integrated furnace control boards. LED diagnostic codes: 2 blinks = pressure switch stuck open, 3 blinks = draft pressure error, 4 blinks = high-limit open (check filter), 7 blinks = gas valve circuit error. Power surges are the leading cause of board failure — a whole-house surge protector is cheap insurance. Shop Ruud control boards →

Rheem vs Ruud — Same Parts?

Identical. Rheem and Ruud are the same manufacturer (Rheem Manufacturing). They share every internal component — same compressor, same board, same sensors, same part numbers. Rheem is sold through Rheem dealers; Ruud through independent distributors. The equipment is the same.

Ruud Parts FAQ

Are Rheem and Ruud parts the same?
Yes — Rheem and Ruud are manufactured by the same company (Rheem Manufacturing). Identical internal components, identical part numbers. The only difference is the distribution channel: Rheem through Rheem Pro Partners, Ruud through independent distributors.
Where do I find my Ruud model number?
On the data plate — typically inside the electrical access panel on condensers, or inside the blower door on furnaces. Rheem/Ruud model numbers follow patterns like RA1436AJ1NA (condenser) or R96VA0402317MSA (furnace).
Why does my Ruud furnace keep shutting off after a few seconds?
Almost certainly the flame sensor — Rheem/Ruud furnaces have the highest flame sensor replacement rate of any brand. Carbon buildup on the sensor rod prevents flame detection. Clean with fine sandpaper or replace (under $20). If cleaning only lasts a few days, the sensor rod is pitted and needs replacing.
Is Rheem a good brand?
Rheem is the #2 residential HVAC manufacturer in the US behind Goodman/Daikin. Known for solid reliability, competitive pricing, and wide parts availability. The Prestige series competes with premium brands, while Classic Plus offers strong value. Rheem also manufactures water heaters and is one of the few companies making both HVAC and water heating equipment.
