Failed Hot Surface Ignitor
Most common ignition failure on modern furnaces. The HSI cracks or burns out after 5-10 years of use. Without ignitor heat, the gas valve opens but no flame.
Power on and call for heat. Within 15-30 seconds the ignitor should glow bright orange-red. If you see no glow but hear the gas valve open (and possibly smell unburned gas), the ignitor has failed.
Replace with matching ignitor — silicon nitride lasts longer than silicon carbide. Handle by the ceramic base only. Most are 1-2 screws to remove. $25-60 part.
