HVAC Diagnostic Guide MEDIUM URGENCY

Furnace Pilot Light Going Out

Standing pilot light won't stay lit, or relights but goes out repeatedly.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. Verify gas is on (other gas appliances working)
  2. Check the pilot flame color — should be steady blue, not yellow or weak
  3. Look for drafts near the furnace that could blow out the flame
  4. If pilot lights but won't stay lit when you release the gas knob, thermocouple is the likely culprit

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

50%

Failed Thermocouple

What's happening

The thermocouple is a small metal probe that sits in the pilot flame. The heat generates a tiny voltage that tells the gas valve 'pilot is lit, keep gas flowing.' When it fails or oxidizes, the voltage drops, the valve closes, and the pilot goes out.

How to check

Light the pilot per the furnace label. Hold the knob down for 60 seconds, then release. If pilot goes out within seconds, thermocouple is failing. Visual check: probe should sit IN the flame, not next to it.

How to fix

Replace thermocouple. $10-20 part. Most are 18-36 inches long with universal threading. Position the new one so the tip sits inside the pilot flame about 1/2 inch from the burner. Don't overtighten the brass fitting.

Dirty Pilot Orifice

What's happening

The tiny opening that lets gas through to the pilot has accumulated dust, spider webs, or corrosion. Reduced gas flow makes a weak yellow flame that can't heat the thermocouple properly.

How to check

Pilot flame is yellow, orange, weak, or flickering. Should be a steady blue ~1 inch tall fully engulfing the thermocouple tip.

How to fix

Shut off gas. Remove pilot assembly. Carefully clear the orifice with compressed air (not a wire — could enlarge the precise opening). Reinstall and test.

Drafts Blowing Out the Pilot

What's happening

A nearby air leak, return duct, or improper combustion air supply creates drafts strong enough to extinguish the pilot. Most common after duct work or basement renovations.

How to check

Light a stick of incense near the furnace and observe smoke movement. Significant air movement near the burner area = draft issue.

How to fix

Find and seal the draft source. Could be a basement window crack, attic bypass, or unsealed return duct. Sometimes installing a pilot flame shield helps.

10%

Low Gas Pressure

What's happening

Gas supply pressure has dropped below what the furnace requires. Could be utility-side issue, a partially-closed valve, or a regulator problem.

How to check

Other gas appliances also weak (water heater takes forever, stove burners weak)? If yes, utility issue. If only the furnace pilot is weak, the regulator at the furnace may be the problem.

How to fix

Utility issue: call your gas company. Local issue: licensed gas tech tests pressure with a manometer and adjusts or replaces the regulator.

Failed Gas Valve

What's happening

The gas valve's pilot safety mechanism has failed. Even with a good thermocouple signal, the valve won't hold the pilot gas open.

How to check

Confirmed by elimination — new thermocouple, clean orifice, no drafts, but pilot still won't stay lit. Or audible clicking from the valve when releasing the pilot knob.

How to fix

Gas valve replacement. Licensed gas tech recommended. $80-200 part. On older furnaces, this is sometimes the moment to consider whether a 25-year-old furnace is worth repairing.

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

How do I light a pilot light on an old furnace?
Follow the instructions printed on the furnace itself. Generally: shut off the gas knob, wait 5 minutes for gas to clear, turn knob to PILOT, hold down while pressing the igniter button or lighting with a long match. Hold the knob down 60 seconds after the pilot lights, then release and turn to ON.
How much does it cost to replace a thermocouple?
Part: $10-20 universal, $20-40 specific brand. Labor by a tech: $80-150 plus part. DIY is straightforward if you're comfortable working with gas appliances — but if you're not certain, hire a pro. Gas mistakes are dangerous.
Should the pilot light be on all the time?
On older standing-pilot furnaces, yes. The pilot runs continuously to be ready to ignite the main burners. This wastes some gas (~$5-15/month). Modern furnaces use electronic ignition (no pilot) and only fire when needed.
Is it safe if my pilot keeps going out?
The safety mechanism is doing its job — when the pilot dies, the gas valve closes and prevents gas accumulation. But repeated relighting is wasteful and indicates a real problem. If the pilot goes out and you smell gas strongly, leave and call your gas utility.
