HVAC Diagnostic Guide HIGH URGENCY

Furnace Clicking But Not Igniting

Furnace makes clicking sounds at startup but burners never ignite — usually the gas valve trying repeatedly.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. Note the clicking pattern: rapid clicks (gas valve attempts) vs slow clicks (pressure switch)
  2. Look for the LED status light blink pattern through the inspection window
  3. Check if you can see the ignitor glow during attempts
  4. Verify gas is on (other gas appliances working)

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

35%

Failed Hot Surface Ignitor

What's happening

The clicks are the gas valve opening and closing as the control board attempts ignition. Without a working ignitor (glowing element), gas can't light, and the board cycles through 3 attempts before lockout.

How to check

Watch through inspection window during ignition attempts. Should see bright orange-red glow within 15-30 seconds. If you see no glow but hear clicks and possibly smell unburned gas briefly, ignitor is the issue.

How to fix

Replace ignitor. $25-60 part. Match type (silicon nitride preferred for longer life). Handle by ceramic base only — finger oils ruin them.

Failed Gas Valve

What's happening

Gas valve clicks when commanded (audible solenoid action) but doesn't actually open the gas flow. Ignitor glows, you hear the click, but no flame. Often the click is louder and more pronounced than normal.

How to check

Ignitor visibly glows. You hear gas valve click. But no flame. Multimeter shows 24V at the gas valve terminals during the click — valve has power but doesn't mechanically open.

How to fix

Gas valve replacement. Licensed gas tech only. $80-200 part. Test all gas connections after replacement.

Pressure Switch Won't Close

What's happening

After the inducer fan starts, the pressure switch must close before ignition can begin. If it doesn't close (or chatters open and closed), you hear clicking as the control board tries to proceed. Common cause: blocked exhaust vent.

How to check

Check exterior vent pipes for snow, ice, bird nests, debris. LED code typically indicates pressure switch fault.

How to fix

Clear vent obstructions first. Check the silicone tubing between the pressure switch and the inducer — should be intact, not cracked. Replace pressure switch if bad ($30-80 part).

Locked-Out Control Board

What's happening

After 3 failed ignition attempts, the control board enters lockout. The clicking stops, but earlier clicks may have been audible. Won't try again until reset.

How to check

Furnace had been clicking, then stopped. LED diagnostic light shows lockout code. Power-cycling at breaker for 1 minute clears it temporarily.

How to fix

Find the underlying cause (ignitor, gas valve, sensor) BEFORE resetting. Just resetting without fixing means the same failure repeats.

Dirty Flame Sensor (False Failure)

What's happening

Burners actually light briefly, but the dirty flame sensor doesn't detect it. Gas valve closes within 5-10 seconds (safety), system cycles to next attempt. The clicks are repeated ignition attempts.

How to check

Watch ignition attempts. If you see a brief flame that goes out within 10 seconds, then attempts start over, flame sensor is the issue.

How to fix

Power off, gas off. Clean flame sensor with fine sandpaper. Reinstall, restore power, test.

Low Gas Supply

What's happening

Manual gas valve at the furnace is partially closed, or upstream gas issue. Gas valve opens (click) but insufficient gas flow for ignition.

How to check

Locate manual shutoff valve at the furnace gas line. Handle parallel to pipe = OPEN. Other appliances working = supply is OK to the building.

How to fix

Open the manual valve fully. If still no ignition, gas utility issue or local pressure regulator problem.

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my furnace click 3 times then stop?
Standard 3-attempt lockout. The control board tries to ignite up to 3 times. If all fail, it locks out for safety to prevent gas accumulation. Power-cycle to reset, but find the cause first.
How do I know if my gas valve is bad?
Multimeter at the gas valve terminals during an ignition attempt: 24V present = signal is getting there. If signal is present but no gas flows (no flame, no whoosh, no gas smell briefly), the valve has failed mechanically.
Can I replace a furnace gas valve myself?
Technically possible, but strongly discouraged for non-licensed people. Gas connections require proper torque, sealant rated for gas, and pressure testing. Mistakes cause leaks. Hire a licensed gas tech ($150-300 labor).
Why do I smell gas briefly during clicking?
Each ignition attempt opens the gas valve for a few seconds. If the ignitor isn't lighting it, raw gas escapes briefly. Slight smell is expected; strong persistent smell means gas is escaping faster than venting can clear it — shut off and ventilate.
