HVAC Diagnostic Guide HIGH URGENCY

Furnace Making Banging Noise

Loud bang, boom, or pop when the furnace starts up or cycles.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. Note when the bang happens: at ignition startup, during operation, or at shutdown
  2. Replace the air filter if it's been more than 3 months
  3. Listen for whether the bang gets louder over time (concerning)
  4. If you smell gas before or during the bang, leave and call your gas utility

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

35%

Delayed Ignition (Gas Buildup)

What's happening

Gas accumulates in the combustion chamber before igniting because of a dirty ignitor, weak gas flow, or burner buildup. When it finally lights, the accumulated gas explodes — that's the bang. DANGEROUS over time as it can crack the heat exchanger.

How to check

Bang happens at startup (when ignition occurs), not during operation. Often accompanied by a brief gas smell before ignition. Look at burners through the inspection window — yellow flames or uneven ignition pattern across burners are warning signs.

How to fix

Have a tech clean the burners and ignitor immediately. Inspect for proper gas pressure and burner alignment. Don't keep running the furnace with this issue — heat exchanger damage from repeated micro-explosions can be expensive and dangerous.

Expanding/Contracting Ductwork

What's happening

Metal ducts expand when they heat up and contract when they cool. Loose sections of duct flex with a 'thump' or 'bang' as temperature changes. Common in undersized ducts with high static pressure.

How to check

Bang happens shortly after blower starts (warm air hits cold ducts) or shortly after blower stops (ducts cool). Sound is metallic, comes from the ductwork itself, not the furnace. Often worse in winter mornings.

How to fix

Reinforce loose duct sections with sheet metal screws and additional supports. Replace flat sheet metal sections with cross-broken (slightly bowed) sections that don't oil-can. Smaller ducts may need to be enlarged to reduce static pressure.

Cracked Heat Exchanger

What's happening

A crack in the heat exchanger can cause a banging sound as it heats and expands. SERIOUS — cracks release carbon monoxide into your living space. Often paired with rust marks, soot, or yellow flames.

How to check

Bang during operation (not just startup). Yellow flames flickering or jumping. Family members report headaches, dizziness, or nausea while furnace runs. CO detector going off.

How to fix

STOP using the furnace immediately. Call an HVAC tech for inspection. Cracked heat exchangers usually mean full furnace replacement — they're rarely repairable. Many manufacturers honor heat exchanger warranties for 20 years.

Dirty Burners

What's happening

Dust, rust, or debris on the burners disrupts even flame spread, causing uneven ignition or flame rollout that bangs.

How to check

Visual inspection (power and gas OFF): burners should be clean, with crossover ports clear. Yellow flame tips, sooting, or uneven flame heights confirm.

How to fix

Tech removes burners, cleans them with compressed air and a brush, checks burner ports for obstruction. While they're out, inspect heat exchanger for any cracks. $100-200 service call.

Loose Internal Component

What's happening

A panel, flue baffle, or other internal piece has come loose and bangs when the blower starts or when the inducer creates pressure changes.

How to check

Power off. Open access panels. Look for hardware on the bottom of the cabinet, anything visibly hanging loose, or flue components that move when pushed.

How to fix

Secure or replace loose components. Sometimes the fix is a $0.50 sheet metal screw.

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

Is a banging furnace dangerous?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Duct expansion bangs are harmless but annoying. Delayed ignition bangs are dangerous — they damage heat exchangers over time. Cracked heat exchanger bangs are immediately dangerous due to CO risk. If you don't know which type you have, get it inspected.
What does delayed ignition sound like?
A muffled BOOM or WHUMP at startup, sometimes followed by normal operation. The bang is the accumulated unburned gas igniting all at once. May make the burner compartment vibrate or rattle for a moment after.
Why does my furnace bang when it shuts off?
Usually ductwork contracting as it cools. Metal ducts can be reinforced with additional supports or replaced with cross-broken (rigid) sections. If the bang comes from inside the furnace itself at shutoff, it could be flue draft issues — have it checked.
Can a cracked heat exchanger be repaired?
Almost never. Heat exchangers operate at extreme temperatures and pressures, so welded or patched repairs don't hold. Replacement is the standard fix — and on older equipment, full furnace replacement usually makes more sense economically.
