HVAC Diagnostic Guide MEDIUM URGENCY

AC Running Constantly

AC runs continuously without ever shutting off, even when the house feels cool.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. Check thermostat fan setting — ON makes blower run constantly even between cooling calls
  2. Check thermostat HOLD mode and confirm setpoint is realistic for current outdoor temp
  3. Measure temperature differential at vent vs return — should be 18-22°F
  4. Look outside on a 90°F+ day: continuous run is normal during heat waves

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

25%

Undersized System or Extreme Heat

What's happening

If the system is undersized for the space (or the heat load is extreme), the AC can't keep up. It runs continuously trying to reach setpoint but never quite gets there. Normal during 95°F+ days even for properly-sized systems.

How to check

Outdoor temp 90°F+ and system can't catch up = often just extreme load. If happens on 80°F days too = undersized.

How to fix

Reduce heat gain first: blackout curtains on west windows, attic insulation, sealing duct leaks. If problem persists, run a Manual J load calculation. May need supplemental cooling (mini-split for problem zone) or system upgrade.

20%

Low Refrigerant

What's happening

Less refrigerant = less heat absorbed per cycle = system runs longer to remove the same heat. As leak gets worse, runtime increases until system can't reach setpoint at all.

How to check

Weak temperature drop across the indoor coil (less than 15°F), ice on the suction line, longer run times that have grown worse over weeks or months.

How to fix

EPA-certified tech repairs leak, evacuates, and recharges. Don't just top off — it leaks back out.

18%

Dirty Condenser Coils

What's happening

Clogged outdoor coils can't reject heat efficiently. System runs continuously trying to compensate. Often the cause when symptoms start gradually over a single cooling season.

How to check

Visual inspection — fins matted with cottonwood, dust, grass clippings.

How to fix

Power off, hose from inside out, coil cleaner spray for stubborn buildup. Maintain 2 feet clearance around the unit.

15%

Thermostat Fan Set to ON

What's happening

If fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, the blower runs continuously — regardless of cooling state. You hear constant airflow but the system isn't actively cooling all the time. Easy to mistake for AC running constantly.

How to check

Check the FAN setting on your thermostat. Should be AUTO for normal operation.

How to fix

Switch fan to AUTO. Blower will run only during actual cooling calls.

Leaky Ductwork

What's happening

Cooled air escapes into attic, crawlspace, or wall cavities instead of reaching living spaces. System runs longer trying to deliver effective cooling. Can lose 20-40% of capacity to leaks.

How to check

Inspect accessible ductwork for disconnected sections, holes, or gaps at joints. Feel for cool air leaking from duct seams in unconditioned spaces.

How to fix

Seal duct joints with mastic (not duct tape — it fails). Major sealing jobs are best done by aeroseal contractors.

10%

Thermostat Failure or Wiring

What's happening

Thermostat fails to read indoor temperature correctly, never satisfies its cooling call. Or stuck contactor at the outdoor unit keeps the compressor running regardless of thermostat command.

How to check

Compare thermostat reading to a separate thermometer. Difference of 5°F+ suggests thermostat failure. Stuck contactor: AC keeps running even when you turn thermostat fully OFF (only the disconnect stops it).

How to fix

Replace thermostat ($20-200 part). For stuck contactor, replace it ($20-50 part).

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for AC to run all day in summer?
During heat waves (95°F+), it's normal and actually efficient — short cycling at peak load wastes more energy than continuous runtime. If outdoor temps are moderate (under 85°F) and the AC still runs constantly, something is wrong.
Why does my AC run constantly but the house is still warm?
Three main causes: undersized system, low refrigerant, or dirty outdoor coil. Each reduces cooling capacity below your home's heat gain rate. The system runs nonstop trying to catch up.
Does running AC constantly cost more than cycling it?
Counter-intuitive answer: running continuously during extreme heat actually costs LESS than cycling on/off, because startup current is the most expensive moment. The cycling pattern is what efficient systems should do under normal load — continuous runtime is a sign of equipment strain.
Will my AC break from running constantly?
Continuous operation is normal during heat waves. But chronic continuous operation indicates undercooling — wear on the compressor accelerates because it never rests. Address the root cause (sizing, refrigerant, coils) before it leads to compressor failure.
