AC Blowing Warm Air

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

Dirty Air Filter

What's happening

A clogged filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil. The coil can't absorb heat properly, and over time it may freeze solid, blocking airflow entirely.

How to check

Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If light barely passes through, or the filter is gray and dust-caked, it's overdue. Filters should be changed every 1-3 months in cooling season.

How to fix

Replace with a fresh filter of the same size and MERV rating. Don't go above MERV 13 in residential systems — too restrictive for most blowers.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

What's happening

Ice has built up on the indoor coil. The unit blows warm air because no heat exchange is happening. Usually caused by restricted airflow OR low refrigerant.

How to check

Turn off the AC at the thermostat but leave the blower fan ON for 1-2 hours. Open the air handler panel — if you see ice or water dripping, you found it. Common signs: water around the indoor unit, ice on the copper suction line outside.

How to fix

Step 1: Let it thaw completely (don't try to chip the ice). Step 2: Replace the filter. Step 3: Open all supply vents and registers. Step 4: If it freezes again within 24 hours, you likely have low refrigerant — call a tech for a leak check.

Low Refrigerant / Leak

What's happening

The system has lost refrigerant through a leak. Without enough refrigerant, the unit can't move heat efficiently. Refrigerant does NOT get "used up" — if you're low, you have a leak somewhere.

How to check

Listen for hissing or bubbling near the copper lines or indoor coil. Look for oily residue around fittings (refrigerant carries oil). Check for ice on the suction line. A pro will use electronic leak detection or UV dye.

How to fix

This requires EPA Section 608 certification by law. A licensed tech will locate the leak, repair it, evacuate the system, and recharge. Just topping off refrigerant without fixing the leak is illegal and wasteful.

Failed Run Capacitor

What's happening

The dual run capacitor that starts your outdoor compressor and fan has degraded or failed. If only the fan cap side failed, the compressor may still run but inefficiently.

How to check

Look at the outdoor unit: a humming sound but no fan spin is the classic sign. If you can safely access the electrical box (power OFF and discharged), look for a bulging top or oily residue on the capacitor. Test with a multimeter capacitance setting — readings more than 6% below the labeled MFD rating mean replace.

How to fix

Replace the capacitor with one matching the original MFD and voltage rating. Most are $15-40 part. WARNING: capacitors store dangerous voltage even after power is off — discharge with an insulated screwdriver before touching terminals.

Outdoor Unit Not Running

What's happening

The outdoor condenser unit is off entirely while the indoor blower runs. Common causes: tripped breaker, blown fuse, failed contactor, or thermostat wiring issue.

How to check

Walk outside while the AC is supposedly running. Listen for the fan and look at the spinning blades. If silent: check the disconnect box on the wall next to the unit, check your breaker panel, check the inline fuses (some units have small fuses in the disconnect).

How to fix

Reset breaker once. If it trips again immediately, stop — you have a short. Replace blown fuses with the exact same amperage. If breaker holds but unit still doesn't run, the contactor (the relay that powers the compressor) may have failed.

Dirty Condenser Coils

What's happening

The outdoor unit's coils are clogged with cottonwood, grass clippings, or dirt. The system can't reject heat to outside air, so it can't cool indoor air effectively. Severe cases overheat the compressor.

How to check

Look at the fins on the outdoor unit. Should be visible metal louvers. If they're packed with debris or matted with cottonwood fluff, that's the problem. Run your hand over them lightly — heavy dust transfers immediately.

How to fix

Power OFF at the disconnect. Use a garden hose (NOT a pressure washer — bends fins) to spray from the inside OUT. A coil cleaner spray helps for stubborn grime. Keep 2 feet of clearance around the unit.

Thermostat Settings or Failure

What's happening

Sometimes the simplest cause. Thermostat is in HEAT mode, FAN is set to ON instead of AUTO (constant air movement masks cooling), batteries are dead, or the unit itself failed.

How to check

Check thermostat mode (COOL not HEAT/FAN), fan setting (AUTO not ON), and temperature setpoint (5-10°F below room temp). Look for low-battery warnings. If it shows a setpoint but the system never responds, the thermostat may have failed.

How to fix

Set to COOL, AUTO fan, low temperature. Replace batteries (most use 2x AA). If completely unresponsive, the thermostat itself may need replacement.

Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?

Can I add refrigerant to my AC myself?
No. Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification by federal law. Topping off refrigerant without fixing the underlying leak is also illegal and won't solve the problem — the refrigerant will just leak out again.
How long does it take to fix an AC blowing warm air?
Depends on the cause. A dirty filter: 5 minutes. A frozen coil: 2-3 hours to thaw + filter change. A capacitor replacement by a pro: 30-60 minutes. A refrigerant leak repair: 2-4 hours plus parts. Compressor failure: replace the whole system in most cases.
