The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms the furnace actually ignited. It works by flame rectification — the lit flame conducts a tiny microamp current back to the control board, proving gas is burning safely. When the rod becomes coated with oxide or carbon, that signal drops and the board shuts the gas valve as a safety measure. The classic symptom is short-cycling: the furnace lights for 3–7 seconds, then shuts off, then tries again, often ending in a hard lockout with a flashing fault code. This is an OEM Carrier flame-sense rod with a matched sensing element and porcelain insulator, sized so the rod sits correctly in the flame envelope. A healthy sensor reads roughly 1–6 microamps of flame current with a meter set to microamp mode; below about 0.5 µA the board will drop out. The ceramic insulator must be intact — a hairline crack grounds the signal and mimics a dirty sensor. Rod length and insulator placement determine how much flame current the sensor actually sees. A generic rod that's slightly too short or mounted at the wrong depth sits at the edge of the flame and never builds a stable microamp signal, causing the very short-cycling you're trying to fix.
