The hot surface igniter is the heart of your Carrier furnace's ignition sequence. On every call for heat the control board sends 120V to this element, which glows white-hot (1,800–2,500°F) to light the gas at the burners. When it fails the classic symptom is no heat: the inducer spins, you hear the gas valve click, but the burners never light and the furnace locks out after three or four tries. A weakening igniter may also glow dimly, crack, or take too long to reach temperature, causing intermittent heat and short-cycling on cold mornings. This is a silicon nitride igniter — the modern, far more durable upgrade over the brittle silicon carbide design. Silicon nitride resists thermal shock and lasts much longer, with a typical cold resistance of 40–75 ohms. Check it with a multimeter: an open or infinite reading means the element is cracked and must be replaced. It operates on 120 VAC, and the bracket and ceramic block are matched to the Carrier burner assembly for correct flame placement. Igniters are unforgiving of substitution. A generic igniter with the wrong resistance won't reach reliable ignition temperature — too high and it never glows hot enough, too low and it burns out early. OEM units hold tight resistance tolerances and use the exact standoff distance from the burner; universal aftermarket igniters often mount at the wrong angle, causing delayed ignition, rollout, and repeated lockouts.
