The hot surface igniter is what lights the gas in your furnace. On a call for heat, the control board sends voltage to the igniter, it glows white-hot, and the gas valve opens to ignite the burners. It's the most-cycled wear part in the furnace and a very common failure point. When it cracks or burns out, the burners never light — you get the inducer running and the blower hum but no flame and no heat, usually ending in a hard lockout with the control board flashing an ignition-failure code.
