The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that the furnace actually lit. It works by flame rectification — the flame conducts a tiny microamp current that tells the board it's safe to keep the gas valve open. When the rod gets coated with oxide or carbon, that signal drops and the board can no longer 'see' the flame. The classic symptom is short-cycling: the furnace lights, runs 3–7 seconds, then shuts the gas off and tries again, often locking out after several failed tries and leaving you with no heat.
