The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that a flame is actually present after ignition. It works by flame rectification — the lit flame conducts a tiny DC current that proves combustion is happening. When the rod becomes coated with oxide or carbon, or the rod itself weakens, the board can no longer 'see' the flame and shuts the gas valve as a safety measure. The classic homeowner symptom is a furnace that lights normally, burns for two to seven seconds, then shuts off — repeating two or three times before locking out with no heat. You may hear the igniter glow and the burners ignite, only to have everything go dark again.
