The hot surface igniter is the ignition source for your Carrier gas furnace. On every call for heat, the integrated furnace control sends 120 volts to the igniter, which glows white-hot (around 2,000°F) and lights the gas streaming from the burners. It is one of the most failure-prone parts in any modern furnace because it is repeatedly heated and cooled. When it fails you'll typically get no heat even though the inducer and blower may run, a furnace that clicks and tries to fire but never lights, a visibly cracked or broken element, or a hard lockout after three or four failed ignition attempts — usually flagged by a flashing LED fault code at the control board.
