The flame sensor is a single thin metallic rod positioned directly in the burner flame whose only job is to prove to the control board that the burners actually lit. It senses flame through rectification — bathed in flame, the rod passes a tiny microamp DC current back to the board. As the rod oxidizes, builds up a carbon film, or cracks, that current fades until the board can no longer confirm a flame.
