The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and proves that ignition actually occurred. Using flame rectification, it passes a tiny microamp DC current through the flame back to the control board; if the board doesn't sense that current within a few seconds, it closes the gas valve as a safety measure.
