The run capacitor gives the fan motor and/or compressor in your Carrier unit the phase-shifted boost they need to start and run efficiently. It stores and releases energy on every cycle to keep the motor's run winding properly energized. As capacitors age under heat they bulge, leak, or drift out of spec, and the motor begins to struggle — you'll hear humming or clicking from the unit, see the fan blade hesitate or need a push to spin, or experience hard starts, tripped breakers, and no cooling. A failed capacitor is the single most common no-cool failure and, left in service, overheats the very motor windings it is meant to protect.
