The flame sensor is the small safety probe that confirms a flame is actually present after your Carrier furnace lights. It uses flame rectification — a microamp DC current that passes through the flame to ground — to tell the control board the burners are lit. When the sensor's surface oxidizes or the rod cracks, the board can't "see" the flame and shuts the gas valve within seconds as a safety measure. The tell-tale symptom is short-cycling on a call for heat: the igniter glows, the burners light for 2-7 seconds, then everything shuts off, and the cycle repeats. You may notice no sustained heat, the furnace locking out after several tries, or a flashing fault code on the control board. This flame sensor is matched to the PY3PEA048090NB furnace. It is a single-rod Kanthal-type sensing electrode with a ceramic insulator and a spade or screw terminal.
