The hot surface igniter (HSI) is the element that glows red-hot to ignite the gas at your Carrier furnace's burners on every heat call. When the thermostat calls for heat, the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, it heats to roughly 2,000°F, and the gas valve opens to light the burners. Igniters are among the most failure-prone furnace parts because the element is thermally cycled hundreds of times and is mechanically brittle. When it cracks or burns out, the result is no heat: the inducer runs, you may hear the gas valve click, but the burners never light, the blower pushes cold air, and after a few failed attempts the furnace goes into lockout.
