The pressure switch is the safety device that confirms your inducer (draft) motor is actually pulling combustion air through the heat exchanger and venting it before the control board is allowed to energize the igniter and open the gas valve. It senses negative pressure created by the running inducer and closes a set of normally-open contacts. When it fails, sticks open, or its sensing hose fills with condensate, the furnace will run the inducer but never light the burners, short-cycle, or lock out with a flashing fault code on the control board. On a cold morning the most obvious symptom is simply no heat, often with the blower humming but no flame. This switch is calibrated to a specific trip point measured in inches of water column (commonly in the -0.40 to -0.65 range for this furnace family), with normally-open contacts that close only under proper draft vacuum. The port count (single versus dual) and the WC set point must match the original exactly. Generic pressure switches frequently ship with looser calibration tolerances, so they either nuisance-trip in cold or windy conditions or, worse, fail to detect a partially blocked vent and defeat the safety function entirely.
