The hot surface igniter is what lights the burners in your Carrier furnace. On each heat call the control board sends current through the igniter element, heating it to roughly 2,000°F so it can ignite the gas as the valve opens. When an igniter fails — and it's one of the most common no-heat causes — you'll notice the furnace going through its full startup but never lighting, the inducer and igniter cycling repeatedly, and then a hard lockout.
