The hot surface igniter is the component that actually lights the gas burners in your Carrier furnace. When the thermostat calls for heat, the control board energizes the igniter until it glows near 2,000°F, then opens the gas valve so the fuel ignites against the hot element. A failed igniter is the single most frequent no-heat complaint: the furnace will run through its sequence — inducer spins, you hear the click — but the burners never light, the unit retries a few times, and then locks out cold.
