The hot surface igniter is the component that physically lights the gas in your Carrier furnace's burners. On a call for heat, the control board sends 120V to the igniter, which glows white-hot (around 2,000°F) so the gas valve can open and the burners ignite. When the igniter cracks or wears out — the single most common no-heat failure — the furnace will run its inducer, click the gas valve, but never light, then lock out and flash an ignition-failure code. You may notice the furnace trying several times before giving up, or cold air blowing because the blower runs without a flame.
