The hot surface igniter is what lights the burners on your Carrier furnace. On a call for heat the control board sends 120V to the igniter, which glows white-hot and ignites the gas as the valve opens. When the igniter fails the furnace runs its full pre-purge, you hear the inducer and the gas valve click, but no flame appears — so the burners never light, the unit goes into a flame-fault lockout, and you get nothing but cold air from the registers. A cracked or aged element may also ignite inconsistently, causing the furnace to short-cycle or lock out after several failed attempts. This is a 120V silicon carbide hot surface igniter with a typical cold resistance in the 40–90 ohm range. Silicon carbide elements reach roughly 2,500°F within a few seconds but are brittle and degrade with every heat cycle; that's why they're the most common wear item on a modern furnace.
