The hot surface igniter lights the burners on your Carrier furnace. On a call for heat the control board sends 120V to the igniter, it glows white-hot, and it ignites the gas the instant the valve opens. When the igniter fails the furnace completes its pre-purge, you hear the inducer spin up and the gas valve click, but no flame ever appears — the burners stay dark, the board drops into a flame-fault lockout, and only cold air reaches the registers.
