The flame sensor is a thin rectification rod that sits directly in the burner flame and tells the furnace control board that ignition actually succeeded. After the igniter glows and the gas valve opens, the board looks for a tiny electrical current flowing through the flame. When the rod gets coated with oxide or carbon, that signal drops and the board can no longer 'see' the fire. The result is unmistakable: the furnace lights for three to seven seconds, then snuffs the gas and tries again, short-cycling repeatedly before locking out with no heat. Homeowners often notice cold air from the registers, a furnace that 'tries but won't stay lit,' and an error flash on the control board. A flame sensor works by flame rectification: immersed in flame, the rod passes a small DC current, typically 1 to 6 microamps.
