The flame sensor is a slender rectification rod positioned in the burner flame whose only job is to prove to the control board that ignition actually happened. Once the igniter glows and the gas valve opens, the board watches for a faint electrical current conducted through the flame itself. As the rod accumulates oxide and carbon film, that current fades and the board concludes there is no flame — even when the burners are clearly lit. The telltale symptom is a furnace that fires for a few seconds, then abruptly cuts the gas and restarts, cycling over and over until it locks out and delivers no heat. You may feel cool air from the vents and see a fault code blinking on the board. Flame sensing relies on rectification: a rod in flame passes a small DC current, normally in the 1 to 6 microamp range. This OEM Carrier rod carries the correct tip alloy, insulator length, and bracket geometry so the tip lands in the precise flame zone the board is calibrated for. Above roughly 1.5 µA the furnace runs happily; drop below about 0.5 µA and it faults out. OEM matters because aftermarket rods use cheaper alloys and wider insulator tolerances. A tip even 1/8" out of position reads weak and brings back the exact short-cycling you replaced it to stop, and lower-grade metal oxidizes faster, shortening the interval before you are back in the burner box.
