The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that a flame is actually present after ignition. It works by flame rectification — the lit burner conducts a tiny DC microamp current through the flame to ground. When the rod gets coated with oxidation or carbon, that current drops, the board can't 'see' the flame, and it shuts the gas valve as a safety measure. The classic symptom is a furnace that lights for 3 to 7 seconds, then shuts off and tries again, short-cycling repeatedly before locking out with a flame-sense fault code. You'll feel warm air start, then quit. This is a porcelain-insulated flame sensor rod with a single spade terminal, positioned in the burner flame path. A healthy Carrier flame-sense circuit reads roughly 2 to 6 microamps DC; anything under about 1.0 microamp causes dropout.
