The hot surface igniter is the component that lights your Carrier furnace's gas burners. On a call for heat, the control board sends voltage through the igniter, which glows white-hot and ignites the gas as the valve opens. It's the most-replaced wear part in a modern furnace because it's brittle and degrades with every heating cycle. When it fails you get no heat at all: you'll hear the inducer spin up and the gas valve click, but no flame and no warm air, often followed by a hard lockout.
