The flame sensor is the small rod that proves your furnace actually lit. After the hot surface igniter glows and the gas valve opens, this rod sits directly in the burner flame and conducts a tiny microamp current back to the control board, telling it "flame confirmed, keep the gas on." When the rod gets coated with white silica/oxide buildup or corrodes, the board can no longer detect that current and closes the gas valve within seconds as a safety response.
