The hot surface igniter is what actually lights your burners. On a call for heat, the control board sends voltage to the igniter, which glows to roughly 2,000°F so the gas ignites the moment the valve opens. Igniters are brittle and degrade with every cycle, so this is one of the most common no-heat failures.
