The contactor is the electrically controlled switch that delivers 240V line power to your outdoor unit's compressor and condenser fan motor. When the thermostat calls for cooling, the control board energizes the contactor's 24V coil, pulling the contacts closed so the compressor can start. Over thousands of cycles the silver contact pads pit, burn, and arc. When they fail you'll see one of two patterns: an outdoor unit that hums or buzzes loudly but won't start (no cooling, indoor blower still running), or a unit that won't shut off because the contacts have welded themselves closed.
