The pressure switch is the furnace's primary safety device for verifying proper draft. It monitors the negative pressure (vacuum) created by the inducer motor and only closes its contacts once safe airflow through the heat exchanger and flue is confirmed — telling the control board it is safe to open the gas valve and energize the igniter. When this switch fails or its hose clogs with condensate, the furnace will try to start, then lock out: you'll see the inducer spin up but no ignition, a furnace that short-cycles, a flashing fault LED, and ultimately no heat on a cold morning. This is a normally-open switch calibrated to trip at a specific water-column setpoint (often around -0.40\" to -0.60\" WC for this furnace class). The exact setpoint, port count, and barb size are matched to the PY3GNA cabinet and inducer, so trip pressure is correct out of the box. Generic switches frequently ship with a generic setpoint that is close but not exact. A setpoint that is too sensitive causes nuisance lockouts; too loose defeats the safety entirely and can allow ignition during inadequate draft — a flue-gas hazard.
