The flame sensor is a single stainless-steel rod that sits directly in the burner flame and confirms ignition has actually occurred. It works by flame rectification: a tiny DC current passes from the rod, through the conductive flame, to the burner ground, telling the control board that a flame is present. When the rod becomes coated with carbon and silica oxide, or hairline-cracks at the ceramic base, that microamp signal collapses and the board closes the gas valve within seconds as a safety lockout. Homeowners typically notice the furnace igniting for a few seconds and then shutting off (short-cycling), the blower running with cold air, repeated clicking ignition attempts, and finally a hard lockout after three or four failed tries — almost always on the coldest mornings. This OEM sensor uses the correct rod alloy, length, and bend so the flame fully envelops the tip. Healthy operation reads roughly 1–6 µA DC on a multimeter set to microamps; anything under ~0.5 µA causes dropout.
