The hot surface igniter lights the gas burners every time your furnace runs. On a call for heat the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, it glows white-hot within a few seconds, and the gas valve then opens onto the element to ignite the burners. Because it endures violent thermal cycling on every heat cycle, it is among the most common furnace failures. When the element cracks or burns open, you get no heat: the inducer runs and the sequence starts, but the burners never light, the gas valve recloses, and the board eventually locks out. Typical symptoms are a furnace that clicks and hums but blows only cold air, or one that quit overnight with the house cold by morning.
