The contactor is the high-voltage switch that powers your Carrier outdoor unit. When the thermostat calls for cooling, the 24V control circuit energizes the contactor coil, pulling the contacts closed and sending line voltage to the compressor and condenser fan motor. Because it switches heavy current thousands of times per season, it's one of the most wear-prone parts in the system. When it fails, symptoms include an outdoor unit that won't start (no hum, no fan) while the thermostat still calls for cool, a loud chattering or buzzing at the unit, or — in a stuck-closed failure — a condenser that runs nonstop and won't shut off even when the thermostat is satisfied.
