The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame on your Carrier PY2PPB048115AB and proves the burners actually lit. It works on flame rectification: the flame conducts a tiny DC microamp current to ground, and the control board uses that signal to confirm flame and keep the gas valve open. When the rod becomes coated with oxidation or soot — or fails outright — the furnace lights for a few seconds and then shuts off on flame loss, repeating that 'lights then dies' cycle until it locks out and you're left with no heat. This is a stainless/Kanthal flame rod on a ceramic insulator, sized and positioned to match the Carrier burner. A healthy sensor reads roughly 2–6 microamps of flame current (anything below about 0.5–1 µA drops out), and the rod must show infinite resistance to ground through its insulator. A generic sensor with the wrong rod length or bend sits outside the hottest part of the flame envelope and reads low microamps, causing nuisance shutdowns even when the burners are firing. The OEM rod uses the correct alloy, insulator, and geometry so the board sees a strong, stable signal. Install difficulty: 1/5. Tools needed: 1/4" nut driver and a multimeter capable of reading microamps (DC). #1 SAFETY WARNING: Turn off the gas supply and shut off power at the breaker before servicing, and handle the ceramic insulator gently — cracking it shorts the sensor to ground. This part is compatible with Carrier model PY2PPB048115AB. Always verify the part number against your unit's data plate before ordering.
OEM parts are manufactured to the exact factory specifications for your unit. Generic aftermarket alternatives may fit physically but often use lower-rated components that reduce equipment life and void manufacturer warranties. When the cost difference between OEM and generic is $10-30, the OEM part is always the smarter investment on a system worth $5,000-$15,000.
Same-day shipping on orders before 3 PM CST. Standard delivery 2-5 business days, express options available at checkout. 30-day hassle-free returns on uninstalled parts — free return shipping included. 1-year OEM factory warranty coverage.
