It works by flame rectification — the flame conducts a tiny microamp current from the rod to ground, telling the board it's safe to keep the gas valve open. When the rod oxidizes or carbons over, that signal drops below threshold and the board shuts the gas off as a safety. The classic symptom: the furnace lights normally, burns for 3–7 seconds, then snuffs out and tries again — short-cycling on ignition, often three tries before a hard lockout and no heat.
