The pressure switch is the safety device that proves your Carrier furnace is venting properly before it ever allows the gas valve to open. It senses the negative pressure (vacuum) created by the inducer motor and closes its contacts only when flue airflow is adequate. When the switch fails, sticks open, or its rubber sensing hose cracks or clogs with condensate, the furnace will try to start — the inducer spins up and you hear a click — but the burners never light and the unit shuts down. Homeowners typically notice short-cycling, no heat, and a flashing fault code (often three or four blinks) on the control board. A switch stuck closed is more serious, since it can let the furnace fire without confirmed venting.
