The hot surface igniter is what lights the gas in your Carrier furnace. On a call for heat, the control board sends voltage to the igniter, it glows white-hot, and the gas valve opens to ignite the burners. It is the most frequently replaced ignition component because the element is brittle and degrades with every heating cycle. When it cracks or burns out, the furnace runs its full sequence — inducer, then a pause — but you'll see no glow, hear no ignition, and get cold air or no heat.
