The flame sensor is a simple but critical safety device in your Carrier furnace. After the igniter lights the burners, the sensor — a thin metal rod positioned in the flame — uses flame rectification to send a tiny microamp signal back to the control board, proving the burners actually lit. If the board doesn't see that current within a few seconds, it shuts the gas valve to prevent a dangerous gas buildup. The classic failure symptom is a furnace that lights normally, runs for 3-7 seconds, then shuts off — over and over. This short-cycling is almost always a flame sensor coated with oxide or carbon buildup, or a cracked, eroded rod that can no longer carry the signal. This is a single-rod flame sensor with a ceramic insulator and a spade or screw terminal. A healthy sensor reads a flame current typically in the 1-6 microamp range; below roughly 1 µA the board will drop out.
