The flame sensor is a single metal rod that confirms a flame is actually present after the burners light. It works by flame rectification—passing a tiny microamp current through the flame to ground—telling the control board it's safe to keep the gas valve open. When the rod gets coated with oxide or carbon, that signal weakens and the board shuts the gas off as a safety measure.
