The flame sensor is a single metal rod seated in the burner flame that confirms to the control board the gas has actually ignited. It works by flame rectification — a tiny microamp current passes through the flame to ground. When the rod gets coated in silica and oxide or corrodes, that signal drops and the board can no longer "see" the flame, so it closes the gas valve within seconds as a safety measure. Homeowner symptoms: the furnace lights for 3–7 seconds then shuts off, repeated short-cycling, the blower running with no sustained heat, and the unit locking out after several failed attempts. This OEM rod uses a high-temperature Kanthal-type alloy that resists scaling at burner temperatures.
