The pressure switch is a safety interlock that confirms the draft inducer is actually moving combustion air and venting flue gas before the board allows ignition. It senses negative pressure (vacuum) through a hose tapped to the inducer housing; a diaphragm closes a set of contacts only when proper draft is established. If venting is blocked, the inducer is weak, or condensate clogs the drain, the switch stays open and the furnace will not light. Symptoms include a furnace where the inducer spins up and then everything stops, no ignition on a heat call, and a control-board flash code pointing to a pressure-switch fault — often with a gurgling or whistling hose.
