The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and proves to the control board that your furnace has actually ignited. It works by flame rectification: when the flame bridges the rod and the grounded burner, a tiny DC current flows back to the board confirming fuel is burning safely. As the rod oxidizes and collects carbon and silica scale, that signal weakens. When it fails you'll see the burners light for 2-7 seconds and then shut off, the blower run with cold air coming from the vents, and after three to five retries the furnace drops into hard lockout and won't fire at all — usually showing up as intermittent no-heat on the coldest mornings. This OEM rod produces a clean flame-rectification signal in the 1-6 microamp DC range; most Carrier boards need roughly 0.7-1.0 µA minimum to prove flame. It uses an oxidation-resistant Kanthal/stainless element with a high-temp ceramic insulator rated for continuous flame exposure and a 1/4" quick-connect terminal. OEM matters here because the alloy and tip geometry control how strong a rectification signal the rod generates. Generic rods often use lower-grade steel that oxidizes within a single season, dropping the microamp signal below threshold and bringing back nuisance lockouts.
