The hot surface igniter is the element that glows white-hot to light the burners at the start of each heat cycle. When the board calls for heat, line voltage runs through the igniter until it reaches ignition temperature, then the gas valve opens and the flame lights off it. Igniters are the single most common furnace failure: they're brittle and degrade with every thermal cycle. When one fails you'll hear the furnace go through its sequence — inducer, then a click — but get no ignition and only cold air, or you'll see a cracked or broken element through the burner viewport. A weak igniter that no longer reaches full temperature causes intermittent no-heat that's worst on cold starts. This OEM igniter uses a durable silicon nitride element, which is far more shock- and erosion-resistant than older silicon carbide igniters and resists the cracking that comes from handling and thermal cycling. It operates on 120V and is matched to the original resistance and bracket geometry so it seats at the correct distance from the burner ports.
