The pressure switch is a safety device that confirms the induced-draft (inducer) motor is actually moving combustion air through the heat exchanger before the control board allows the gas valve to open and the igniter to fire. It senses negative pressure in the vent and closes a set of contacts to prove draft. When it fails or clogs you will notice the inducer running but the burners never lighting, the furnace locking out and short-cycling, repeated ignition retries, or a fault/flash code reporting an open pressure switch and no heat at all. This is a single-stage negative-pressure (vacuum) switch, typically rated around -0.40 to -0.60 inches of water column trip point, with a normally-open snap-acting diaphragm, a 1/4 inch barbed hose port, and 1/4 inch quick-connect spade terminals. The trip set point is calibrated to this furnace's draft design and is printed on the switch body. An OEM Carrier switch is calibrated to the exact set point this heat exchanger and inducer require. Generic switches with a loose trip tolerance can close too early (allowing ignition before safe draft is established) or too late (nuisance lockouts on cold or windy days).
